AEGINA: THE FIRST CAPITAL OF THE GREEK STATE

Aegina is designated on November 11, 1826 as the seat of the provisional Greek Government. But it took more time until Ioannis Kapodistrias arrived on the island to take up his duties. This happened on January 26, 1828, when he took the oath in the Metropolis church.
This period, essentially, is from 1826 until October 1829, when the capital was finally moved to Nafplio.
Throughout the island, visitors have the opportunity to admire unique sights of great historical importance.
Temple of Aphaia Surrounded by pine trees and with a wonderful view of the sea, the Temple of Athena Aphaia is located in the north of the island. It was built in 480 BC. after the naval battle of Salamis. The Temple is of the Doric style and is in very good condition, since 24 of its 34 columns have been preserved.
There is also a small Archaeological Museum where you can see exhibits and representations of the Temple.
Archaeological Site & Museum of Colona The attraction got its name from the one and only column (height 8 m.) that survives from the ancient temple of Apollo. The Archaeological site is located at a distance of only 10 minutes on foot from the port of the island. In the same location is also the Archaeological Museum of Aegina, whose exhibits come mainly from the archaeological site of Kolona.
Saint Nektarios The Monastery of Agios Nektarios is one of the largest monasteries in Greece and one of the largest churches in the Balkans. It was built in 1904, but it took its current form between 1973 and 1994. In the Monastery is the tomb of Agios Nektarios and the relics are kept there. Thousands of visitors visit the Monastery every year to worship.
Old town Paliachora is located on the hill behind the Monastery of Agios Nektarios. It was for many centuries the capital of Aegina, but began to be abandoned in the 19th century after the inhabitants returned to the coastal areas of the island. It is similar to Mystras, since it has many churches and ruins of old houses.
Pachia Rachi is a traditional settlement located at the foot of Mount Hellani above Marathon. There are traditional stone houses and cobbled streets, with a wonderful view of the sea, you can see Aegina and Agistri. In the village there is a theater which operates normally, with a wonderful view of the entire Mount.

Aegina is an island in the Saronic Gulf.
Today it is the second-largest island in terms of area, population, and development.
From Aegina, southwest, begins the coastal road that continues south, 9 km from the port of Aegina and it ends in the traditional fishing village of Perdika.
The main feature of the settlement is the small houses with the yards to communicate with each other.
At the cape of Perdika, there is the Church of Agios Sostis which celebrates its saint on September 7th. Then there is a big festival.
In the spring the hills are flooded with wildflowers of thousands of colors and smells.
In the summer, everything changes. The crystal clear blue sea, swimming, beach games, fishing, and boating.
Very close to the fishing village there is the small mountain village of Sfentouri, and the picturesque sand Beaches, Klima and Sarpa.
The island of Moni is located opposite Perdika, just 8 minutes away by boat.
From the port of Perdika, from Easter until the end of September, there are regular sea connections that pass opposite us, to the island of Moni which is 3 miles from Perdika.
The Monι is a beautiful island with rich vegetation and without human inhabitants, it is home to only deers, small horses, ibex, peacocks, pheasants and friendly squirrels who come to you hoping to be fed.
Its beaches have deep clear waters suitable for underwater fishing on one side of the island while on the other side there is a wonderfully organized sandy beach with clear blue waters together with many smaller places for swimming and fishing.
